Istanbul University Faculty of Science “E.C.A. Planetarium” on Monday, December 25, 2017, was opened with the presence of by our Rector Prof. Dr. Mahmut AK, ELGİNKAN Holding Chairman of the Board of Directors Mrs. Gaye AKÇEN, and the members of the ELGİNKAN Group and guests. Istanbul University and E.C.A. The planetarium, which was opened in the IU Faculty of Science, Astronomy and Space Sciences Department Building Complex in cooperation with the University, is Turkey's first 4K resolution planetarium established within a university unit to be used for education and public events. With a capacity of 39 seats, it will serve to university students and public. The planetarium's presentation system was created with 10 special projectors, an 8-unit surround sound system, a high-performance computer and special lighting. The planetarium, which still has high quality movies shown in planetariums in developed countries, also works like a laboratory for university students. Thanks to this professional planetarium, which was established for the first time in an Astronomy and Space Sciences Department in Turkey, the students of our department have the chance to learn many subjects in their curriculum with an impressive visual presentation. Perhaps the most important feature of this planetarium is that it offers many opportunities to its guests, such as observatories where objects such as the Sun during the daytime and the Moon, planets, stars, etc. can be observed during the night, halls where expert astronomers make presentations, and an astronomy collection. Our planetarium fills an important gap in Istanbul and serves all public, especially primary, secondary, high schools and their equivalents. Istanbul University Faculty of Science E.C.A. you can visit our Astronomy and Space Sciences Department Science-Society Activities page for information about planetarium activities.

Some of the graduates of an educational institution meet in their future lives and friendships continue. In the old days, school friends could only meet face to face at the alumni meetings called rice day and pastry day, which are held once a year, but today communication has become much easier. Although today's internet-based social environments have made communication much easier than before, none of these can replace a warm handshake or a friendly hug. Although our department is an educational institution where few students can enroll, close friendship ties are established between our students and a sense of belonging to our department thanks to the facts that the Department’s building is separate from our faculty and have it’s own garden, which creates the uniting bonds between our students and feeling to belong to our department through public events by working together. In order to live these feelings and feel the bonds, meet the friends, following graduates to understand how to help each other, we organize events for our graduates for once a year since 2016. We called it “Alumni Day” since we have neither börek nor pilav. Everyone who attends to the alumni day, held in a picnic atmosphere in our garden in the month of May, have colorful events, which leaves satisfied.

Hope to see you at our Alumni Day Event every year...

Prof. Dr. Tansel AK
Head of the Department
